After receiving numerous reports from across the state and country of videographer-only depositions being held with alarming frequency, your CalDRA board, at its April meeting, voted to form a task force committee dedicated to research, strategy, and leadership on this issue.

Since that time, CalDRA has received strong support from the reporting community, receiving numerous complaints and disturbing anecdotes shared by certified shorthand reporters, firm owners, and videographers with firsthand knowledge about this dubious practice by a number of agencies “testing the waters” right here in California.

Some other concerns about this issue are:

  • When a licensee is not presiding over a deposition, who is held accountable when the transcriptions are inaccurate?
  • Who is regulating whether or not licensed individuals are transcribing these proceedings after the fact?
  • Is it lawful to place a certification page in a transcript for proceedings over which a CSR did not preside?
  • While a notary license is required to administer oaths in California, are attorneys "stipulating away" even this simple requirement in order to move forward with proceedings when a non-notary videographer is performing the service?

YOUR CalDRA takes this issue very seriously.

We are alarmed and concerned about the future of reporting, knowing now that these companies are promoting this practice under the guise of a "solution” to uncovered jobs in the face of the reporter shortage. We believe that this is a strategic effort on their parts to undermine our profession and deepen their corporate pockets rather than coming to the table to find an ethical resolution to capturing the record. This dangerous new method of preserving testimony sets a precedent that ultimately could result in the total replacement of certified shorthand reporters as guardians of the record.

Reporters, firm owners, are you ready to be replaced, or are you ready to fight to protect the integrity of the record? Will you raise your voices, with your CalDRA leading the way, for a meeting of the minds?

The Event:

Along with our legislative counsel, Ed Howard, your CalDRA board has planned a town hall meeting to hear YOUR experiences, YOUR stories, and YOUR solutions in regard to this issue. We can't brainstorm this problem without your help. We are counting on you to bring us the evidence we need to fight fire with fire!

Please join us for this special session, and make sure to bring your thinking cap. All members of the reporting industry are welcome. Membership is not required.

Special Bonus:

AND... if you're feeling inspired and so inclined to join us: stay a while!

Grab a slice of pizza, BYOB, and roll up your sleeves for a bit of good old-fashioned grassroots work. CalDRA will be holding its annual membership drive immediately following our town hall brainstorming session, where you can help make a difference where it really counts. Join us in calling lapsed and/or potential members to remind them that their membership dollars are sorely needed to help fight to protect our common way of life.
